Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (Rtd) Hafeezur Rehman stated, in clarification that the decision to block the social media platform ‘X’, previously known as Twitter is strictly with the federal government.
Speaking very casually to journalists, he said that “X” would be reopened once the government gives a directive. The platform has received a large number of complaints in Pakistan, and its case is under hearing in Sindh High Court.
Addressing internet shutdowns concerns, the Chairman emphasized that in 2023, India alone accounted for 116 internet shutdowns; in comparison, Pakistan only managed seven instances.
He termed, however, that national security is more paramount than internet shutdowns and added that the PTA does not support internet shutdowns as well.
Not only that, he said, but during Ashura, on the 10th of Muharram, mobile services were suspended in some areas, but internet services were only temporarily halted in specific regions at certain times.
He compared and said that Bangladesh also stopped mobile services at times during their elections, saying every country has its own security threat, and these decisions come on the basis of intelligence reports.
He also confirmed that mobile data services are suspended in Panjgur till further notice because of pending security issues.
