The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken strict action against online gambling and betting activities in the country. According to a statement submitted by the Cabinet Division to the National Assembly, PTA blocks 184 gambling websites and mobile applications . This action aims to curb illegal online betting platforms that have been operating within Pakistan’s digital space.
During the National Assembly session, the Minister In-Charge clarified that while PTA can block gambling websites and apps, taking legal action against individuals involved in these activities is outside its jurisdiction. Additionally, all institutions have been instructed not to enter into agreements with companies linked to gambling.
PTA blocks 184 gambling websites and apps. The Cabinet Division also highlighted that PTA’s powers to remove or block illegal content are limited under current regulations. This means that while the authority can restrict access to harmful online platforms. And broader legal enforcement must come from other government agencies.
Earlier, PTA issued warnings to social media users against sharing or promoting illegal online content. It reminded the public that freedom of expression must not be misused to spread unlawful material. Under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 sharing blasphemous, hateful, obscene, or false propaganda content is a punishable offense.
With this latest move to block gambling websites and apps. PTA continues its efforts to create a safer online environment in Pakistan. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid illegal betting platforms and report suspicious online activities to help enforce digital laws effectively.
