His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, Passes Away Peacefully in Lisbon
Lisbon, Portugal – His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims and a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), passed away peacefully on February 4, 2025, at the age of 88. Surrounded by his family, his death marks the end of an era for the global Ismaili community and the many humanitarian projects he championed.
Prince Karim Aga Khan was the founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for people in some of the world’s most vulnerable regions. His leadership facilitated numerous initiatives in education, healthcare, and economic development, touching the lives of millions.
In Pakistan, the AKDN has been instrumental in various projects aimed at fostering self-reliance and improving living conditions. These projects include the establishment of schools, hospitals, and financial services, which have significantly contributed to the development of underprivileged communities.
The Aga Khan IV is survived by his children – Princess Zahra, Prince Rahim, Prince Hussain, and Prince Aly Muhammad – as well as his brother Prince Amyn Muhammad, half-sister Princess Yasmin, and four grandchildren. The announcement of his designated successor is expected to be made soon, following the reading of his will.
The global Ismaili community and the AKDN have extended their condolences to his family and reaffirmed their commitment to continuing his legacy of humanitarian work
