Pope Leo XIV cites AI as Inspiration Behind Papal Name
Vatican City, May 10, 2025 — In his first public address since assuming the papacy, Pope Leo XIV offered a message of unity and reflection to the faithful gathered at St. Peter’s Square, concluding with a solemn prayer at the historic basilica.
Speaking with calm authority, the newly elected pontiff emphasized the Church’s need to engage with modern challenges while staying rooted in its spiritual mission. “We must walk forward with courage, not fear, as we face a changing world,” he said.
In a revealing moment, Pope Leo XIV explained the symbolic meaning behind his chosen name. He cited several inspirations, notably the rise of Artificial Intelligence, calling it “one of the most powerful forces shaping humanity today.” He added that the Church must provide moral and ethical guidance as society navigates the promises and perils of AI.
“Leo” also pays homage to Pope Leo XIII, remembered for his forward-thinking encyclicals on labor and social justice. “In a time of another great shift, I felt compelled to choose a name that speaks to clarity, courage, and adaptation,” Pope Leo XIV said.

Meanwhile, Cardinal José Martínez, a senior member of the recent conclave, shared insights into the papal election process in an exclusive interview. “There was a deep sense of responsibility in that room,” he said. “The Holy Spirit was present, and when Cardinal Giovanni Bianchi [now Pope Leo XIV] spoke of faith, technology, and the future, many of us felt a spark — a vision that was both humble and bold.”
The new pope concluded his remarks by leading the congregation in a special prayer at St. Peter’s Basilica, invoking peace, wisdom, and unity across borders and beliefs.
As the Church enters a new chapter under Pope Leo XIV, the world watches closely to see how tradition and technology might walk together — guided by faith.
