The Prime Minister of Pakistan told the nation yesterday that his office is paying close attention to the protection of Pakistani students that are right now in the city of Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan where there are violent mobs. The Prime Minister conveyed his deep concern at the disturbances outside the hostels and has directed the Pakistan Envoy to Kyrgyzstan to help students in any required manner.
In a post on X, PM Shehbaz tried to calm down parents by admitting that there are safety and wellness measures being adopted for the students. On the other hand, Embassy of Pakistan in Kyrgyzstan has appealed to all Pakistani students in the country to remain indoors to be safe. The embassy has issued an advisory which came after several incidents of mob violence directed at foreign students in Bishkek, which started after the online-distribution of videos about a fight between Kyrgyz students and the students from Egypt that took place on May 13th.
The Pakistani Embassy reported that the hostels of the medical university and private homes of Indian, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani students studying abroad have been attacked. Although there have been a few cases of minor injuries among Pakistani students, the embassy has ascertained that no fatalities have happened though social media say otherwise.
The embassy managed to contact more than 250 students and their families in Pakistan via the emergency hotline to give them reassurances and updated information on the developing situation. Furthermore, the Kyrgyz government made a statement to clarify that no Pakistani students have died and that the situation is contained.
