The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is now blocking websites identified by citizens and government agencies alike.
The situation is concerning, an estimated 20 million attempts are made each day across Pakistan to access pornographic websites, all of which are already blocked on the international gateway.
Many Pakistani users, however, are bypassing these restrictions through the use of VPNs to access these banned sites. In response, the PTA is implementing a range of measures to effectively restrict this content and is fully committed to addressing this issue.
Recently, the Ministry of Religious Affairs sent a letter to the PTA, formally requesting the removal of pornographic and blasphemous content from social media. The ministry expressed serious concerns in the letter, emphasizing the urgent need to remove such offensive content from the internet immediately.
According to the ministry, the presence of this immoral material on social media has highly negative impacts on society, especially on the younger generation. The letter further stressed that Pakistan’s society has unique social and religious values, and such content is completely contrary to the country’s eastern, religious, and cultural traditions.
