Robert Redford, the Oscar-winning actor, director, and founder of the Sundance Film Institute, has died at 89. His publicist confirmed he passed away on September 16, 2025, at his Utah home, surrounded by family.
Redford’s career spanned over six decades, making him one of Hollywood’s most enduring stars. Known for his golden looks and natural charisma, he rose to fame in classics such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973), The Way We Were (1973), Three Days of the Condor (1975), and All the President’s Men (1976). His blend of rugged charm and quiet intensity placed him alongside icons like Steve McQueen and Gregory Peck.
In 1980, Redford won the Academy Award for directing Ordinary People, showcasing his sensitivity behind the camera. A year later, he founded the Sundance Film Institute, which grew into the world’s premier platform for independent cinema, reshaping the industry and launching countless careers.

Redford balanced stardom with activism, using his influence to champion environmental causes and socially conscious filmmaking. He took risks with roles, often portraying flawed or aloof characters, and later embraced mature performances in films like The Natural (1984), Out of Africa (1985), and The Old Man & the Gun (2018). His last screen appearance was in Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Born in Santa Monica in 1936, Redford pursued painting before turning to acting in New York. His early stage success in Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park led to Hollywood stardom. Despite his superstardom, he consistently sought projects that challenged convention, both as an artist and as a filmmaker.
Redford is survived by his wife, Sibylle Szaggars, two children, and several grandchildren. His legacy endures through his films, his activism, and Sundance, the festival that gave independent cinema its voice.
