The drama serial ‘Mayi Ri’ has recently stirred controversy due to its portrayal of teenage pregnancy in a recent episode, leading to accusations that the show is glorifying child marriage.
Critics of the drama have particularly scrutinized the lead characters, who are depicted as 14-15-year-old individuals trapped in child marriages. ‘Mayi Ri’ explores the challenges of underage pregnancy and how Annie and Fakhir must navigate their new responsibilities.
In response to the mounting concerns, the drama’s director, Meesam Naqvi, addressed the issues during an interview with Fuchsia and clarified that he does not view the show as glorifying child marriage.
Naqvi explained that ‘Mayi Ri’ revolves around a dysfunctional family where early marriages are a common occurrence. The two main characters, Annie and Fakhir, find themselves in the predicament of child marriage and provide solace to one another. It is this aspect of their story that the director believes is not glorifying child marriage but rather shedding light on the challenges faced by such individuals.
Naqvi discussed the criticism surrounding the depiction of young romance on television. He pointed out that in society, there are 12-13-year-olds who engage in romantic relationships. According to the director, society often turns a blind eye to these realities, choosing not to acknowledge what is happening.
