Nestlé has taken a major step towards promoting renewable energy in Pakistan by launching a biomass boiler at its Kabirwala factory. This initiative is part of the company’s larger Rs 2 billion investment in sustainable energy projects across the country. The newly installed biomass boiler will play a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting Pakistan’s goal of generating 60 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.
The project aligns with Nestlé’s global commitment to achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050. It also supports Pakistan’s pledge under the United Nations climate change agreement. While inaugurating the plant Christian Schmid Nestlé’s head of technical operations for Asia Oceania and Africa emphasized the company’s strong belief in Pakistan’s potential. He highlighted that this investment not only helps protect the environment but also brings long-term benefits to the people of Pakistan by promoting sustainability.
The biomass boiler will significantly cut carbon emissions by reducing approximately 10500 tonnes of CO2 every year. This reduction is equal to removing 2300 cars from the roads. The boiler will also contribute to a 20 percent decrease in overall greenhouse gas emissions at the factory. Additionally it will generate around 80000 tonnes of steam annually covering 85 percent of the factory’s thermal energy needs. This will result in major fuel savings including six million Nm3 of natural gas and 29 tonnes of heavy furnace oil per year.
Nestlé Pakistan’s CEO Jason Avanceña reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainability. He pointed out that Nestlé has already made significant progress in adopting renewable energy with the inauguration of two major solar power plants at Kabirwala and Sheikhupura in 2023 and 2024. The launch of this biomass boiler marks another milestone in Nestlé’s broader renewable energy strategy for Pakistan.
As part of its Rs2 billion sustainability plan Nestlé Pakistan is developing more renewable energy projects including additional solar power plants and another biomass boiler at its manufacturing sites. The company has committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 20 percent by 2025 50 percent by 2030 and reaching Net Zero by 2050 in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Nestlé has been operating in Pakistan for over 35 years and continues to contribute to the country’s economic growth. By 2030 the company aims to enhance its exports to 50 million dollars. In 2024 Nestlé Pakistan sourced more than 90 percent of its raw materials and packaging from local suppliers strengthening the country’s industry. The company is also an active member of the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce & Industry Pakistan Business Council and Swiss Business Council further reinforcing its commitment to sustainable business practices.
This latest investment by Nestlé highlights its dedication to environmental responsibility economic development and the future of renewable energy in Pakistan.
