A shocking video has surfaced in the Degari honour killing case, where a mother has defended her daughter’s murder. And calling it a rightful punishment under Balochi tribal traditions. The victim, Bano Bibi, a mother of five, was allegedly killed along with a man named Ehsanullah after being accused of having a relationship.
In her video statement, Bano’s mother claimed that a tribal jirga decided her daughter’s fate. She said her sons were angered by TikTok videos made by the boy, and that the murder was not unjust but in line with local customs. She insisted that Sardar Sherbaz Satakzai, a tribal leader who was arrested in connection with the case, had no role in the killing and demanded his release.
However, Sardar Sherbaz denied all allegations in a phone call to BBC Urdu before his arrest. He claimed that no jirga was held under his leadership, and the decision to kill was taken locally by villagers.
The murder, which took place three days before Eid-ul-Adha in Quetta’s Degari area. Murder sparked outrage on social media and among human rights groups. According to police, a jirga declared the victims guilty of “karokari” (honour-related crime). And fifteen armed men took Bano and Ehsanullah to a remote area where they were shot dead. The act was filmed and later shared on social media, creating fear and anger across the country.
Police have registered a case under anti-terrorism and murder charges. So far, 20 suspects have been detained, including 11 officially arrested, with investigations ongoing.
