(APP): A massive landslide in hilly areas of Papua New Guinea (PNG) with many homes believed to be buried and approx. 100 villagers feared dead.
This massive landslide struck six villages in Papua New Guinea (PNG)’s Enga province early Friday, burying many homes and leaving scores feared dead.
The disaster occurred around 3:00 am local time, causing significant loss of life and property. Provincial governor Peter Ipatas described it as an “unprecedented natural disaster” impacting “more than six villages.”

A rapid response team, including medics and UN agencies, has been dispatched to assess the damage. Initial reports suggest up to 300 people may be affected, with estimates of casualties ranging from 100 to 500.
Aid agencies, including the Red Cross, are on standby, but reaching the remote area could take up to two days. Heavy rain or gold mining activities are suspected to have triggered the landslide.
