Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has unveiled a groundbreaking aquaculture and shrimp farming initiative aimed at transforming the province’s agricultural sector. The project will develop shrimp estates on approximately 5,600 acres in Sargodha, Alipur, and other areas, converting previously unproductive and saline lands into thriving economic assets. This ambitious initiative is expected to boost exports, create thousands of jobs, and strengthen Punjab’s Blue Economy, positioning the province as a hub for modern aquaculture and sustainable farming.
The shrimp farming initiative has already made significant progress. Nine shrimp ponds covering 20 acres are complete, while key infrastructure such as 32 tubewells, eight transformers, and drainage systems are underway. Advanced quality control laboratories in Lahore and Muzaffargarh are near completion, supporting research and production standards. Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized that the initiative reflects Punjab’s experience in managing large-scale agricultural projects and demonstrates her government’s commitment to modern, innovative, and sustainable farming practices. Collaboration with international experts is also underway to train local professionals, ensuring technical expertise and capacity-building in aquaculture.
This initiative highlights the importance of knowledge, training, and long-term planning in Punjab’s agricultural development. By integrating education, research, and modern farming techniques, Maryam Nawaz Sharif aims to increase productivity, attract investment, and empower youth and small business owners. The program also emphasizes sustainable practices that can serve as a model for Pakistan’s broader Blue Economy growth.
The MediaBites Team congratulates Maryam Nawaz Sharif and her government for this historic initiative, which combines innovation, economic growth, and sustainability, setting new benchmarks for Punjab’s agriculture and aquaculture sector.
