A major development has emerged in the Bondi Beach shooting case, with alleged attacker Naveed Akram transferred to Goulburn Supermax, Australia’s highest-security prison, where he will be held in protective custody.
According to Australian media reports, the 24-year-old was moved on Monday to the High Risk Management Correctional Centre (HRMCC), located about 190 kilometres southwest of Sydney. The transfer comes weeks after Akram was discharged from the hospital and remanded into custody.
Akram is facing 59 charges, including multiple counts of murder and terrorism-related offences, following a deadly shooting at Bondi Beach on December 14. Prosecutors allege the attack targeted Jewish people celebrating Chanukah by the Sea, triggering nationwide shock and heightened security concerns.
After his hospitalization, Akram had been held at Long Bay Correctional Complex in Sydney’s Malabar suburb. He was formally refused bail in December and has remained in custody since.
While New South Wales authorities did not confirm the transfer, a government spokesperson said community safety remains the top priority and that Corrective Services NSW takes the management of high-risk offenders “incredibly seriously.”
“The High Risk Management Correctional Centre is the most secure prison in the state and is equipped to accommodate inmates who pose the highest levels of risk,” the spokesperson said, adding that officials could not comment on individual inmate circumstances.
The HRMCC, attached to Goulburn Supermax, houses Australia’s most dangerous and high-profile male offenders under strict isolation and security protocols. The case against Akram is continuing through the NSW court system, with further hearings expected in the coming weeks.
