Libya’s military chief Mohamed Ali Ahmed Al-Haddad was killed in a Falcon 50 plane crash near Ankara, Turkey, prompting flight disruptions as investigations began, officials confirmed.
WEBDESK, Dec. 24, 2025 — Libya’s top military commander Mohamed Ali Ahmed Al-Haddad was killed in a plane crash near Ankara, Libya’s prime minister confirmed on Wednesday, calling the incident a “major loss” for the country.
Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh said in a statement on social media that Al-Haddad and four others died when their aircraft went down in Turkey as the Libyan delegation was returning from an official visit to Ankara.
According to the Associated Press, Libyan authorities said contact with the aircraft was lost about half an hour after takeoff due to a technical malfunction.
Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said the Falcon 50 business jet crashed late Tuesday near the town of Haymana, south of Ankara. Communication with the aircraft was lost at 8:52 p.m. local time after it departed Esenboğa Airport en route to Tripoli.
Yerlikaya said the aircraft had sent an emergency landing signal shortly before radar contact was lost. Wreckage was later located in the area. Security camera footage aired by local television channels showed a sudden flash lighting up the night sky near the crash site.
Al-Haddad was the highest-ranking military commander in western Libya and played a key role in United Nations-backed efforts to reunify the country’s divided armed forces.
During his visit, Al-Haddad had met with Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler and other senior officials.
Following reports of the crash, Ankara airport was temporarily closed and several flights were diverted, according to Turkish media.
Turkey maintains close political, economic and military ties with Libya’s U.N.-backed government in Tripoli and has been a key supporter during years of instability in the country.
