Today, the art film industry mourns the loss of Shyam Benegal, the “grandfather of art films,” who passed away at the age of 90. Known for creating iconic masterpieces such as “Mandi,” “Ankur,” and “Zubeida,” Benegal had been suffering from kidney disease for some time.
Shyam Benegal was born in December 1934 in Hyderabad into a Brahmin family. His father, a renowned photographer, inspired Benegal’s passion for filmmaking. At just 12 years old, he made his first film using a camera gifted by his father. Despite completing a Master’s degree in Economics from Hyderabad University, his creative mind led him to the world of films.
Benegal played a pivotal role in introducing talents like Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi, and Smita Patil to the film industry. He also founded the Hyderabad Film Academy.
Many, including myself, have learned the art of filmmaking from Shyam Benegal’s classic films. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of filmmakers.
