What happened in Lahore recently has left countless people heartbroken. The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) demolished the city’s bird and pet market, and with it, thousands of innocent animals were buried alive.
If the market was illegal, authorities had every right to take action — but why didn’t they first move the animals to safety? Those cats, dogs, rabbits, and birds were not lawbreakers. They were living, breathing souls, dependent on humans for care and mercy.
This act has shaken many across Pakistan. People are asking a simple question: where is our humanity? In a religion that teaches compassion, how can such cruelty be ignored? Islam clearly says that killing even one innocent life is like killing all of humanity. Yet here, thousands of tiny lives were taken in a matter of minutes — buried under debris and dust, with no chance to escape.
Videos and eyewitness accounts describe heartbreaking scenes — cages crushed, feathers scattered, and silence where chirping once filled the air. These animals had no voice, no power, and no one to protect them. It was our responsibility, and we failed them.
It’s not just about animals — it’s about the reflection of our moral decay. When we lose empathy for helpless creatures, we lose what makes us truly human. What if nature decided to return this cruelty? The same earth we use to bury others could one day bury us under earthquakes, floods, and disasters — reminders that we are not in control.
This tragedy calls for accountability and awareness. Authorities must ensure that future demolitions consider the welfare of all living beings. Pakistan needs strong animal protection laws that make such negligence punishable. Civil society, influencers, and citizens must unite to demand compassion and justice.
Let’s remember — the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught kindness to all creatures, even to birds and ants. Our faith and humanity both command us to show mercy to the weak and voiceless.
We can’t undo what happened, but we can speak up so it never happens again. Those silent cries under the rubble should haunt our conscience until justice is done. If we stay silent today, we’ll have no right to ask for mercy when it’s our turn to face judgment.
Raise your voice — for the voiceless. Because silence in the face of cruelty is complicity.
