The Karachi Press Club annual election for 2025 has been officially announced. The election will be held on Saturday, December 28, at the Karachi Press Club premises. Voting will commence at 9:00 AM and continue until 5:00 PM.
The club has a total of 1,503 registered voters, and members must present both their CNIC (National Identity Card) and club membership card to cast their votes.
Key Candidates and Panels
For the position of President, Geo News’ Fazil Jamili is the candidate representing The Democrats panel. Fazil Jamili is the current president and has served multiple terms previously. Other key candidates from the Democrats panel include:
- Sohail Afzal Khan (Daily Jang) for Secretary.
- Irshad Khokhar (Daily Ummat) for Vice President.
- Imran Ayub (Dawn) for Treasurer.
- Muhammad Munsif (Daily Jang) for Joint Secretary.
While The Democrats panel faces no direct competition from another panel, independent candidates have entered the race.
Some candidates are running independently in the upcoming Karachi Press Club Election 2025. Ayub Jan Sarhandi, M. Jawed Qureshi, and Muhammad Arif Anjum are also competing against The Democrats’ Fazil Jamili for the position of President.
For the post of Treasurer, The Democrats’ Imran Ayub faces independent candidate Aftab Hussain.
For Joint Secretary, The Democrats’ Muhammad Munsif is competing with Qamar Rizvi.
Membership and Contributions
Out of the 1,503 members, 600 new memberships were granted in 2018 by the Democrats panel, aimed at strengthening the journalist community.
Despite numerous challenges faced by journalists, including salary disputes, unemployment, and the demand for housing plots, the Karachi Press Club management has fostered strong relationships with stakeholders. As a result, significant progress has been made, including resolving land allocation issues and providing lease facilities. The Sindh Government also supports the club with an annual grant of 70 million PKR.
Facilities and Achievements
The Karachi Press Club stands out as Pakistan’s most advanced press club. It was the first press club in Pakistan to offer a digital studio for its members. Other state-of-the-art facilities include:
- A modern computer room.
- High-speed Wi-Fi Internet.
- Solar power supplying electricity to the entire club.
- A modern library.
- Top-tier canteen facilities.
Future Plans
The management is considering introducing limited memberships for digital media professionals in the future, as the Karachi Union of Journalists has already started offering memberships to digital media practitioners.
Undoubtedly, the Karachi Press Club continues to set the standard for press clubs across Pakistan.
