In a fascinating discovery, scientists from the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology have uncovered a promising new approach to fighting cancer—hidden in the gut bacteria of a Japanese tree frog. This breakthrough could change the way researchers think about cancer treatment.
Researchers focused on amphibians and reptiles after noticing that these animals rarely develop cancer. They collected 45 bacterial strains from frogs, newts, and lizards and tested their ability to suppress tumor growth. Out of these, nine strains showed strong anti-tumor activity, but one stood out: Ewingella americana, found in the Japanese tree frog.
In lab tests, E. americana completely eliminated tumors in mice after just a single dose. Unlike other strains that only offered temporary relief, this bacterium prevented tumors from coming back—even after cancer cells were reintroduced 30 days later. The mice remained tumor-free for the following month, showing a remarkable and sustained effect.
Experts explain that E. americana works in two key ways: it attacks tumor cells directly and boosts the immune system by activating T cells, B cells, and neutrophils. Its ability to survive in low-oxygen environments, where most chemotherapy drugs struggle, gives it an extra advantage against tumors.
Animal studies suggest the treatment is relatively safe. The bacteria cleared quickly from the bloodstream, caused no lasting toxicity, and did not harm healthy organs. In fact, injections of E. americana were even more effective at shrinking tumors than some traditional chemotherapy drugs, including doxorubicin.
However, researchers caution that extensive testing is still needed before this therapy can be used in humans. E. americana can cause infections in people, so safety will be a key concern in upcoming trials.
Published in the journal Gut Microbes, this study highlights the untapped potential of biodiversity and microbial ecosystems in medicine. Experts say that nature itself may hold solutions to some of our most challenging health problems—and this frog could be leading the way to a new era of cancer treatment.
This discovery also emphasizes the importance of preserving wildlife and studying unique organisms, as they could hold the key to groundbreaking medical innovations.
