Lahore is enduring a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 43°C (109.4°F) and no immediate relief in sight. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) attributes this extreme weather to continental air and high atmospheric pressure over the region. Humidity levels are hovering around 60%, further intensifying discomfort. The PMD has issued a heatwave warning, urging residents to stay indoors during peak hours and remain well-hydrated.
Hospitals are reporting a surge in heatstroke cases. Mayo Hospital admitted eight patients, General Hospital treated 25, and Ganga Ram Hospital saw ten cases in just 24 hours. An estimated 9,000 people have fainted and been hospitalized in Lahore. Medical professionals are urging the public to avoid unnecessary sun exposure and to take preventive measures.
Compounding the crisis, the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) is grappling with significant power shortages, resulting in daily load shedding of five to six hours. This has triggered civil protests, with residents expressing frustration over prolonged outages amid the sweltering heat.
The PMD forecasts a chance of rain later this week, offering a glimmer of hope. Until then, residents are advised to take all necessary precautions to protect their health.
