The India blocks Azerbaijan SCO membership story has drawn global attention after Baku claimed its membership was stopped for political reasons. At the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said New Delhi blocked Baku’s bid for full membership. He linked this action to Azerbaijan’s close partnership with Pakistan.
According to reports, India has not officially confirmed the reason for blocking Azerbaijan’s request. However, sources suggest New Delhi raised concerns about the country’s close ties with Islamabad. The India blocks Azerbaijan SCO membership issue highlights how regional rivalries are shaping decisions within the organization.
President Aliyev stressed that Azerbaijan values its “brotherhood” with Pakistan and will continue to strengthen this bond. He added that India’s move will not change Baku’s foreign policy.
The SCO currently includes China, Russia, India, Pakistan, and several Central Asian states. Membership gives countries a bigger voice in regional security and economic cooperation. Azerbaijan had hoped to join as a full member, but India’s opposition has delayed the process.
