IndiGo, a low-cost carrier, has made a record-breaking aircraft order with Airbus, surpassing Air India’s previous order with both Airbus and Boeing earlier this year. The airline has placed an order for 500 Airbus A320 family aircraft, marking the largest-ever single aircraft purchase by any airline from Airbus. This deal solidifies IndiGo as the world’s largest customer of the A320 Family.
While the engine selection and the specific mix of A320 and A321 aircraft are yet to be determined, the purchase agreement was signed on June 19 at the Paris Air Show 2023, attended by top officials from IndiGo and Airbus.
Combined with their previous order of 480 aircraft, this new order brings IndiGo’s total order-book to nearly a thousand aircraft. The deliveries of these aircraft will be scheduled between 2030 and 2035. Currently operating over 300 aircraft, IndiGo’s order-book includes a combination of A320NEO, A321NEO, and A321XLR aircraft.
The strategic partnership between IndiGo and Airbus is further strengthened by this order, making it a monumental milestone. Since its establishment in 2006, IndiGo has now ordered a remarkable total of 1,330 aircraft from Airbus.
The fuel-efficient A320NEO family aircraft will enable IndiGo to maintain its focus on reducing operating costs, achieving fuel efficiency, and ensuring high reliability standards. This young and fuel-efficient fleet will contribute to IndiGo’s sustainability goals, building upon the already achieved 21% reduction in CO2 emissions between FY16 and FY23.
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, emphasized that this extensive order allows the airline to continue boosting economic growth, social cohesion, and mobility in India. The partnership with Airbus plays a significant role in realizing this vision. Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International at Airbus, expressed excitement about the formidable partnership with IndiGo, contributing to the expansion of air connectivity in India’s domestic and international markets. This landmark order reflects the commitment to democratizing affordable air travel in the world’s fastest-growing aviation market.
