Heavy Rains Kill 5 in Lahore; Flash Flood Threat Looms Over Punjab
LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — July 11, 2025 — At least five people were killed in Lahore on Thursday as heavy monsoon rains triggered urban flooding, damaged homes and roads, and brought life to a standstill in the provincial capital of Punjab. Authorities have warned of continued rainfall and possible flash floods across the region through July 17.
The deaths were caused by electrocution, roof collapses, and other rain-related accidents, according to Rescue 1122 officials. Streets in several parts of the city, including Gulberg, Model Town, and Shahdara, remained submerged as stormwater drainage systems struggled to cope with the volume of water.
Across Punjab, the ongoing rains have claimed at least 22 lives since the start of the monsoon season, provincial disaster management officials said. More than a dozen people have been injured or displaced from low-lying areas vulnerable to flooding.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast further heavy rains and thunderstorms for central and northern Punjab, including cities such as Lahore, Faisalabad, and Sargodha. The department also issued a flash flood warning for southern districts like Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, and Muzaffargarh, where hilly streams and rivers are at risk of overflowing.
Emergency services and local administration teams have been placed on high alert. Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) teams are working around the clock to pump out water from flooded roads, while health departments are monitoring for potential outbreaks of waterborne diseases.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and directed authorities to intensify relief operations. “Every life matters. Our priority is to safeguard people and ensure quick restoration of essential services,” she said in a statement.
Officials have urged the public to remain indoors during heavy rains, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated through official advisories.
