Haval has overtaken Toyota in Pakistan’s SUV market for the first time, while Kia’s Sportage remains a long-standing bestseller. The shift signals changing consumer preferences and intense competition among automakers.

Haval has overtaken Toyota in Pakistan’s SUV segment for the first time, marking a major shift in consumer behavior and industry competition. Market data from August and October 2025 shows Haval’s SUV sales rising sharply, outpacing Toyota’s historically dominant position and reshaping the country’s automotive landscape.
In August, Haval sold an estimated 1,045 units, beating Toyota’s SUVs, including the Fortuner and Hilux. By October, Haval’s sales climbed to about 1,379 units, while Toyota’s combined SUV and IMV lineup recorded 787 units. The trend underscores a growing consumer appetite for modern, tech-focused SUVs.
Kia remains an important part of this changing picture. Since its local debut in 2019, the Kia Sportage has surpassed 40,000 units sold, making it Pakistan’s best-performing locally produced C-segment SUV. Although Kia’s SUV market share hovered around 0.9 percent in October, the Sportage’s long-term popularity continues to influence buyer sentiment and segment expectations.
Industry analysts attribute Haval’s rise to competitive pricing, strong features, and a nationwide expansion of dealerships and after-sales services. The brand has capitalized on growing demand for larger, family-friendly vehicles, while Toyota faces pressure in a segment where its IMV-based models once had little competition.
Toyota’s overall presence in Pakistan remains solid, especially in passenger cars such as the Corolla and Yaris. But the SUV market now features sharper competition from both Haval’s rapid growth and Kia’s established local base.
The shift signals broader changes in the industry. Automakers may adjust pricing, introduce updated models, and expand local assembly to remain competitive. Chinese brands, led by Haval, are gaining ground as Pakistani buyers become more willing to explore alternatives to traditional Japanese options.
Haval must still contend with challenges, including long-term brand trust, parts availability, resale value, and service infrastructure. Analysts say Toyota could regain momentum by refreshing its SUV lineup or revising financing and pricing options.
For now, Haval’s lead highlights a redefined competitive landscape. With Haval’s momentum, Toyota’s response, and Kia’s proven Sportage presence, Pakistan’s SUV market is entering an intensely competitive new phase.
