MediaBites had already reported the news of Hafiz Tariq Mahmood joining 365 News as its Managing Director when the development first surfaced. However, I deliberately took some time before offering my congratulations — not out of hesitation, but to reflect. Because this appointment, while clearly an honour, also calls for a thoughtful pause and a word of caution, especially when the individual involved is, at heart, a newsroom professional.
Those who know Hafiz Tariq Mahmood closely understand this reality well. The editor, the reporter, the newsroom decision-maker within him has always remained dominant, regardless of the designation he has carried. When he took charge of SAMAA TV, many prominent figures in the industry openly questioned whether he would be able to deliver. Skepticism was widespread. But time, as it often does, proved them wrong.
Tariq Mahmood demonstrated that the size of a channel does not define success. What truly matters is competence, editorial understanding, command over news, and professional integrity. Having entered the media industry from the ground up, he carried with him an instinctive grasp of news that cannot be taught in boardrooms. Expecting him to falter was, in hindsight, nothing more than wishful thinking.
At SAMAA, he proved his critics wrong through consistency, discipline, and a clear editorial vision. He showed that leadership in news is not about noise or visibility, but about credibility and control of content. That track record makes his move to 365 News both significant and promising.
That said, the role of Managing Director is largely administrative — and this is where one cannot help but express a sincere concern. The fear is not about capability, but about distance. Administration has a way of pulling newsroom leaders away from the very thing they are most passionate about: news. We have seen this happen before. Habib Akram’s journey is a clear example — elevated to MD, yet gradually distanced from the core of journalism.
My hope, and my earnest wish, is that Hafiz Tariq Mahmood does not allow administrative responsibilities to dilute his editorial instincts. The industry needs newsroom leaders who remain connected to the story, the screen, and the substance — even while sitting in the corner office.
Congratulations once again, Tariq Bhai, on assuming this new and important role at 365 News. May this new seat bring greater influence, sharper journalism, and continued success. Shine on — and prosper.
