NEW YORK — A gunman opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan office tower on Monday, killing four people, including a decorated NYPD officer, in a shocking midday attack that sent ripples through New York’s business and law enforcement communities.
The slain officer was identified as 32-year-old Didarul Islam, a four-year NYPD veteran and father of two. He was responding to the emergency when he was fatally shot while trying to apprehend the gunman.
The incident occurred at 345 Park Avenue. A high-profile office building owned by Rudin Management and home to major tenants such as the National Football League (NFL) and investment firm Blackstone. The shooting took place on the 21st floor, causing panic among employees who barricaded themselves in offices and conference rooms as shots rang out.
According to police, the gunman, whose identity has not been released, entered the building just after noon and began shooting indiscriminately. Responding officers quickly arrived at the scene, leading to a tense confrontation. The gunman was shot dead by NYPD during the standoff.
Mayor Eric Adams praised Officer Islam’s bravery, calling him “a true hero who gave his life protecting others.” NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban said Islam “ran toward danger when others ran from it.” Adding that his service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Investigators are looking into whether the gunman had any connection to the building’s tenants or was acting independently. The FBI is assisting with the investigation.
Rudin Management released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy and confirmed that all tenants are safe. NFL and Blackstone both issued brief statements condemning the violence and offering condolences to the victims’ families.
The shooting has reignited calls for tighter building security. And gun control measures as city officials grapple with the aftermath of yet another act of workplace violence.
A citywide vigil is planned later this week in honor of Officer Islam and the other victims.
