Balendra Shah, a rapper-turned-politician widely known as “Balen,” was sworn in as Nepal’s prime minister on Friday after a landslide election victory powered by a youth-led anti-corruption movement.
The 35-year-old leader’s Rastriya Swatantra Party secured a commanding majority, winning 182 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives, marking one of the most decisive mandates in recent Nepali political history.
“I pledge that I will be loyal to the constitution,” Shah said during his oath-taking ceremony in Kathmandu, as jubilant supporters gathered to celebrate what many see as a generational shift in leadership.
From rap icon to national leader
Before entering politics, Shah built a strong following as a rapper, using his music to highlight social issues and governance failures. Shortly after his electoral victory, he released a rap video outlining his vision for reform and unity — a move that quickly went viral and reinforced his connection with younger voters.
His campaign centered on tackling corruption and reviving the economy following months of unrest, during which at least 77 people were killed in protests against the previous administration.
New cabinet, tough road ahead
Shah has moved swiftly to form his cabinet, appointing Sudan Gurung, a former youth activist, as interior minister, while Swarnim Wagle takes charge as finance minister with the critical task of stabilizing Nepal’s fragile economy.
Meanwhile, Shishir Khanal assumes the role of foreign minister, facing the delicate challenge of maintaining balance between Nepal’s powerful neighbors, India and China.
Global reactions and a new era
International leaders, including Narendra Modi, extended congratulations, signaling strong global interest in Nepal’s political transition.
Outgoing interim prime minister Sushila Karki welcomed the change, calling it an opportunity for a new generation to lead with both “caution and boldness.”
Shah’s rise marks a dramatic turning point in Nepal’s political landscape, as a reform-driven, youth-backed leadership takes charge following a turbulent period of protests, violence, and widespread demands for accountability.
