What’s the latest situation?
After the severe violence and clashes between Punjab police and lawyers, nationwide strikes were observed on May 8th. The strikes continued on Thursday and Friday, with lawyers abstaining from attending High Courts and local courts. Only cases of significant importance were heard.
What order did the Chief Justice of Lahore High Court issue?
Chief Justice of Lahore High Court, Malik Shahzad Ahmed Khan, issued strict directives to the Punjab Home Department to ensure foolproof security of the courts. Therefore, a large number of police personnel are being deployed around and within the courts.
Senior Advocate Hamid Khan:
Senior lawyer and Senator Hamid Khan stated that they strongly condemn the violent incidents that occurred on May 8th. They condemned the closure of entry to the Lahore High Court for lawyers, asserting that it is their legal and fundamental right to access the court.
“Preventing them from entering any court premises is outright aggression. They demanded the immediate abolition of Section 740 imposed on lawyers, and those who enforced Section 740 against lawyers should face the same charge and be appropriately punished.
He emphasized that courts will not be intimidated, and lawyers should be allowed to remain in one place.
“We strongly condemn attempts by the Law Minister to amend the Constitution. Any such attempt will be vehemently opposed. We denounce and will resist this unjust government with full force.”
He also congratulated lawyers and the Lahore High Court Bar cabinet for filing a petition in support of the six brave judges of the Supreme Court.”
President of Lahore High Court Bar, Asad Manzoor Butt:
“Long live the unity of lawyers! We are lawyers first and foremost. Our party is the black coat.
Qadir Bukhsh Chahal is like a younger brother to me, and no one dares to create a ‘crack’ in the Lawyer’s Unity. The lawyers elected me, and those who cast their votes deserve respect.
Inshallah, we are all united, and there is no complaint against anyone. We will never forgive those who perpetrated violence against my innocent lawyers.
This is a democratic country; it doesn’t belong to anyone’s father. Lawyers were, are, and will remain organized! You have misused your authority, I console the sentiments of the downtrodden lawyers.”
Maqsood Buttar – Senior Lawyer:
Former President of Lahore High Court Bar, Member of Pakistan Bar Council, and senior lawyer Maqsood Buttar stated that people from the legal fraternity in the government are playing a ‘Good cop, bad cop’ game. They are simultaneously serving the government and the opposition.
Either they should resign from the Law Ministry or leave their membership of the Pakistan Bar Council. He further said that those involved in violence against innocent lawyers should resign immediately.
The Chief Minister of Punjab and the IG Punjab have no right to sit on their chairs under any circumstances. Lahore High Court is the home of lawyers, and any attempt to prevent lawyers from coming here is strongly condemned.
Maqsood Buttar further stated that they fully support the withdrawal of Section 780 A; it is a weak attempt to blackmail lawyers. Additionally, the relocation of courts to Model Town is completely unacceptable, and this decision should be immediately reversed.
Former judge and prominent figure of the Independent Group, Ahsan Bhoon stated:
“I fully support the courage shown by Lahore High Court Bar during this crisis, and standing shoulder to shoulder with the arrested and injured lawyers. I endorse and commend the President of Lahore High Court Bar and his cabinet for this effort.
Furthermore, lawyers have always upheld the sanctity of the profession and the court. I believe anyone who attacks the court is a traitor. Our colleagues participated in a peaceful demonstration but upon the orders of the Chief Justice of Lahore High Court, where they were subjected to brutality by the police.
They were asked by the police to either leave or face the consequences. Under the supervision of the Chief Justice of Lahore High Court, innocent lawyers were subjected to tear gas, toxic water was thrown at them using water cannons, and then brutalized by the police, which I strongly condemn.
I did not sit in air-conditioned rooms during this incident; instead, I stood shoulder-to-shoulder with our young lawyers. I strongly demand Punjab Bar Council, Lahore Bar Council, and Lahore High Court Bar to promptly send a reference against the current Chief Justice, Lahore High Court.
President Lahore Bar Association, Munir Bhatti:
“We do not want courts to be transferred to different regions, which could create a big hassle for the lawyers and litigants. Because in Islamabad and Karachi, all local and high courts are built in one place.”
According to Munir Bhatti, “This is not a political movement, nor are we on strike in support of any political party, and this is a consensus issue of lawyers against which protests are ongoing.”
Mr. Bhatti clarified that until the government and Lahore High Court withdraw the notification for the transfer of district courts from the court complex, peaceful protests will continue to be recorded.
Barrister Qadir Buksh Chahal Secretary LHCBAR:
General House Condemnation Meeting was held at Kayani Hall Dated 09-05-2024 Against the lawyers who were injured as a result of brutal torture, lathi charge, and shelling by the Punjab Government and the Punjab Police against the respected lawyers who peacefully protested their arrest.
