MUMBAI – June 14, 2025: A British family of four, who had come to India to visit their sick mother, died in the Ahmedabad plane crash. Javed Ali Syed, his wife Mariam, and their two children, Amani (6) and Zayn (4), were among the passengers on the flight.
Javed was originally from Malad East, Mumbai, but moved to the UK eleven years ago. He met Mariam there, got married, and they both became British citizens. They lived in Kensington, London. Javed worked as a hotel manager and Mariam was a brand ambassador at Harrods.
The family came to Mumbai last week to visit Javed’s mother, who is suffering from a heart problem. They also wanted to celebrate Eid ul Azha with their relatives. Since they couldn’t find a direct flight to London from Mumbai, they decided to travel to Ahmedabad and fly from there.
Sadly, they boarded the Air India flight that crashed. The bodies have not been found yet. Javed’s brother, Imtiyaz Ali, and uncle Ayub Shaikh have gone to Ahmedabad to help identify the family through DNA testing.
Imtiyaz said it had been a long time since the family visited India. He believes it would have been safer if they had flown directly from Mumbai. He is still in shock and is showing photos of his brother’s family to reporters.
In the UK, Mariam’s sister-in-law Yasmine Hassan, 45, said the British government has not reached out to the families. “We understand that answers take time,” she said, “but no one has even asked if we’re okay. They were British citizens.”
The families of 53 British nationals who were on board the flight are waiting for help, answers, and closure.
Stay tuned for updates on the Ahmedabad air crash and rescue operations.
