Founder of PTI Imran Khan’s decision to formally align with the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MWM) in the National Assembly is being hailed as a brilliant tactical move. While this alliance may not secure the majority needed to form a government at the center, it serves several strategic purposes.
Speaking to the media in Islamabad on Tuesday, PTI spokesperson Raoof Hasan said that the former prime minister, while ruling out the prospects of any talks with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), has directed the party to form a coalition with Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) over reserved seats.
As per Imran Khan’s decision, firstly, by bringing independent members of the assembly under the umbrella of a formal party, it imposes party discipline on them. This means that these independents are less likely to switch loyalties, as they risk losing their seats if they do so. Furthermore, the Supreme Court decision on Article 63-A reinforces this discipline, as defectors would not even be able to vote against the party line without consequences.

While the numerical odds of forming a government at the center still seem slim, this move ensures that Imran Khan’s coalition can maintain unity within its ranks. Additionally, it positions them as the strongest contender for the leader of the opposition role, further complicating matters for the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
The PPP now faces tough choices, as they may be compelled to team up with the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) against their preferences. This is because the PTI-MWM alliance threatens to snatch away the leader of the opposition slot from them. Thus, the PPP finds itself in a challenging position, navigating between its strategic alliances and political aspirations.
