The cricket world has been shaken by alarming news from Australia, where former Test great Damien Martyn has been placed in an induced coma after being diagnosed with meningitis.
The 54-year-old former Australian batsman is currently hospitalised in Brisbane, where doctors are closely monitoring his condition. Cricket sources confirmed that Martyn fell seriously ill several days ago before being rushed to the hospital.
Martyn, one of Australia’s finest stroke-makers, represented his country between 1992 and 2006, scoring nearly 10,000 international runs across Tests and one-day internationals. He played a key role in multiple Ashes campaigns and was part of Australia’s 2003 World Cup–winning squad. He remains the last Australian batter to dominate India in an away Test series, earning Player of the Series honours in the 2004 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
His former teammate, Adam Gilchrist, confirmed the seriousness of the situation in a statement on behalf of the family.
“He is getting the best of treatment. Amanda and the family know that a lot of people are sending their prayers and best wishes,” Gilchrist said.
Support has poured in from across the cricketing fraternity. Former teammate and coach Darren Lehmann shared a message of solidarity on social media, while Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg said the entire cricket community is standing with Martyn and his family.
Meningitis is a serious infection causing inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord and can be life-threatening.
As fans across the world anxiously await updates, thoughts and prayers are with Damien Martyn — a champion of the game now fighting his toughest battle off the field.
