At least 250 people were killed and over 500 injured after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Jalalabad, Afghanistan, near Pakistan’s border, triggering massive rescue operations in the remote mountainous region.
WEBDESK — At least 250 people were killed and more than 500 others injured after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan, Taliban officials said Monday.
The quake hit around midnight local time, about 17 miles from Jalalabad, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Its shallow depth of about 5 miles made it particularly destructive despite the moderate magnitude.
Sharafat Zaman, a spokesperson for Afghanistan’s Public Health Ministry, said rescue operations were underway in the mountainous region, but access remained difficult.
“It will take time to get the exact information about human losses and damage to the infrastructure,” Zaman said. “We have launched a massive rescue operation and mobilized hundreds of people to help in the affected areas.”
Afghanistan sits on multiple fault lines between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it prone to frequent and deadly earthquakes. The rugged terrain of eastern Afghanistan is also susceptible to landslides, further hampering relief efforts.
In June 2022, a 5.9-magnitude quake struck the same region, killing around 1,000 people and injuring thousands more.
