Geert Wilders, often dubbed the Dutch Trump, has achieved a significant election victory in the Netherlands. His Party for Freedom (PVV) is projected to win 37 seats, placing him in a strong position to form the next ruling coalition and potentially become the country’s next prime minister.
Wilders, known for his populist policies and fiery rhetoric, has faced threats from Islamic extremists, legal troubles, and bans from entering certain countries.
This unexpected victory marks a potential shift in his political trajectory, as mainstream parties had previously shunned him. However, the challenge lies in forming a stable coalition, as some opposing parties, like the left-wing green alliance led by Frans Timmermans, have expressed reluctance to collaborate with Wilders.
Geert Wilders’ election program includes proposals for a referendum on the Netherlands leaving the European Union, a complete halt to accepting asylum-seekers and implementing migrant pushbacks at Dutch borders.
His agenda also advocates for the “de-Islamization” of the Netherlands, although his tone on Islam has been relatively milder in this election compared to the past.
Wilders, driven by a desire to address what he calls the “asylum tsunami,” aims to put an end to the migration issue and asserts that the Dutch people should reclaim their nation, envisioning a return to a prominent global position.
