Chinese automaker Xpeng has launched its new Mona L05 electric crossover in China, offering up to 635 km of claimed driving range, advanced cabin technology and an introductory starting price of just 139,800 yuan (around $20,800). The affordable electric SUV could intensify competition in the global EV market, particularly as Chinese manufacturers expand their international presence.
The five-seat mid-size crossover is available in fully electric and extended-range electric (EREV) versions. Measuring 4,870 mm in length with a 2,940 mm wheelbase, the Mona L05 features Y-shaped headlights, a closed front fascia, semi-hidden door handles and a floating roofline.
Inside, Xpeng has equipped the vehicle with a technology-focused cabin featuring a 17.3-inch central touchscreen, a 26.8-inch head-up display and a separate 17.3-inch ceiling-mounted screen. Other highlights include a 20-speaker audio system, a massage-equipped front passenger seat and 41 storage spaces.
The fully electric versions feature a rear-mounted motor producing 183 kW (245 hp), paired with either a 58.2 kWh or 71.1 kWh LFP battery. According to Xpeng, the model delivers a maximum CLTC-rated range of 635 km (395 miles).
Meanwhile, the extended-range variant combines the same electric motor with a 37.2 kWh battery and a 1.5-litre petrol engine. It offers 310 km of claimed electric-only range and a combined driving range of up to 1,310 km.
Technology is another major selling point. The higher-specification Ultra SE variant features two Turing chips delivering a combined computing capability of 1,500 TOPS for advanced driver-assistance functions. However, drivers must remain attentive and ready to take control.
Xpeng’s Mona L05 is offered in six variants, with introductory prices ranging from 139,800 to 171,800 yuan (approximately $20,800-$25,600). Deliveries in China are scheduled to begin on November 1.
Could it reach the United States? Xpeng has not confirmed a US launch or announced international pricing. However, the company is targeting 65 countries and regions as part of its global expansion strategy.
While its Chinese pricing is unlikely to translate directly to the US market due to import duties, regulations and distribution costs, the Mona L05 highlights how much technology and driving range Chinese automakers are offering at competitive prices.
