The Punjab government has assured the Lahore High Court that the existing slip system in public hospitals across the province will be abolished within four weeks, ensuring that patients receive medical attention without having to obtain registration slips.
Under the proposed system, patients visiting emergency departments and outpatient departments (OPDs) will receive immediate medical attention without the requirement of a slip. A modern, technology-based Patient Management System will also be introduced in government hospitals to streamline patient services and eliminate long queues at registration counters.
Justice Malik Javed Iqbal Venus issued a three-page written order regarding the hearing. Assistant Advocate General Barrister Raja Hashim Javed appeared before the court on behalf of the Punjab government.
During the proceedings, Special Secretary Health Nabeela Irfan assured the court that the slip system would be eliminated from hospitals across Punjab, providing relief to patients who currently face long waiting times at registration counters.
The Lahore High Court directed the provincial government to submit a detailed implementation report within four weeks, warning that legal action could be taken against responsible officials in case of non-compliance.
The court expressed displeasure over the failure of any party to submit a compliance report in a petition that has been pending since 2020. It observed that officials responsible for failing to implement previous directions could face legal proceedings.
The petition concerns the shortage of basic facilities in government hospitals. The court also sought comprehensive reports from all relevant departments regarding the matter.
During the hearing, the Special Secretary Health appeared instead of the Secretary Health and requested additional time to submit the required report.
Subsequently, the Lahore High Court adjourned further proceedings for six weeks and directed the authorities to ensure compliance with its orders.
