A draft proposal outlining mediators’ recommendations for negotiations between the United States and Iran has emerged, indicating renewed efforts to reach an understanding between the two countries.
According to reports, the proposed framework calls for reopening the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic within seven days of an agreement. Under the proposed terms, Iran would transfer its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to a third country. The framework also includes a proposal to reduce the level of uranium enrichment.
China has been suggested as a potential partner in ensuring the implementation of the agreement. The draft also proposes holding direct negotiations between the United States and Iran in Doha. Another key provision states that the United States would respond to every step taken by Iran regarding its nuclear programme.
The draft further proposes establishing a clear mechanism to address any potential violations of the agreement by Iran. An international mechanism would also be created to ensure compliance and monitor the implementation of the proposed deal.
Meanwhile, the United States has urged Iran to take advantage of the current opportunity to reach an agreement.
According to a report by US-based news website Axios, Iran has its best opportunity to secure a deal at this time. The report suggests that if Republicans lose the midterm elections, President Donald Trump could order a military operation against Iran.
However, a White House official has said that the election results will not influence Trump’s decisions regarding Iran.
