President Donald Trump has dismissed Katie Zacharia from her position as White House press secretary just five days after her appointment, following a troubled first briefing, questions over her legal credentials and growing concerns among senior administration officials about her readiness for one of the government’s most visible communication roles.
Zacharia’s sudden departure has raised questions about the selection process and the pressure surrounding Trump’s communications team as Republicans approach the November midterm elections. Her appointment had initially appeared to reflect the president’s desire for a strong and loyal defender of his policies amid mounting political criticism.
According to CNN’s reporting, Trump personally offered Zacharia the position after becoming frustrated with the absence of a prominent spokesperson to promote his administration’s message. A familiar face on cable television, Zacharia had frequently defended Trump and his policies. However, her selection reportedly came with limited scrutiny of her experience and preparedness for the demanding role.
Her first White House press briefing on October 13 quickly became a source of controversy. During the session, Zacharia struggled with her delivery and faced difficult questions on major policy issues, including whether the United States had suspended intelligence-sharing with Ukraine. Her performance attracted negative reactions from political observers and reportedly disappointed several senior officials.
Although Trump initially praised her performance during a conversation aboard Air Force One, the criticism surrounding her appearance continued to grow. According to people familiar with the matter, the president later became increasingly concerned about the negative publicity surrounding his new spokesperson.
Questions about Zacharia’s professional credentials further complicated the situation. She had presented herself publicly as a lawyer, but reports indicated that she had failed the bar examination. Zacharia subsequently acknowledged failing the exam, arguing that she had been told she could describe herself as a lawyer, although not as an attorney. Her previous social media activity, including posts identifying her as an attorney, intensified the scrutiny.
Her difficulties continued during television interviews, including an appearance on Fox News with Sean Hannity, who questioned her legal credentials. The interviews reportedly added to concerns within the administration that she was struggling to manage the controversy surrounding her appointment.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung defended Zacharia in a statement, describing her as a talented team member who would continue supporting Trump in a different role. Zacharia also expressed gratitude for the opportunity, writing on X that working for the president had been an honor.
Despite her departure, Zacharia reportedly remains on good terms with members of the administration. CNN reported that she and her family were scheduled to have dinner with Vice President JD Vance on Friday evening.
Trump, meanwhile, is once again without a permanent press secretary during a politically sensitive period. His administration now faces the challenge of finding a spokesperson capable of defending its policies, responding confidently to journalists and maintaining control of the White House’s public message ahead of the midterm elections.
