The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Mumbai has directed Bollywood actor Imran Khan, an American citizen holding an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, to leave India by October 28 following allegations of violating immigration regulations.
The action reportedly followed a complaint filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya, who accused the actor of participating in a political demonstration in Mumbai, allegedly violating the conditions associated with his OCI status.
According to the complaint, Khan attended a protest supporting the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai Central. The alleged political involvement raised questions about whether his activities complied with the restrictions applicable to foreign citizens holding OCI cards.
A Mumbai police officer confirmed that the FRRO had issued a notice to the actor. According to the news agency ANI, the notice was served at Khan’s residence in Khar, Mumbai.
Imran Khan, who is the nephew of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, holds American citizenship and resides in Mumbai. His OCI status allows him to live and work in India under specific immigration conditions.
However, OCI cardholders are not granted all the political rights available to Indian citizens. Certain political activities may raise legal concerns under the regulations governing their status.
The complaint submitted by Somaiya reportedly prompted immigration authorities to examine Khan’s participation in the demonstration and take action.
The development has drawn attention to the responsibilities and restrictions associated with OCI status, particularly for foreign citizens who maintain personal and professional connections with India.
The notice requires Khan to leave the country by October 28. However, the information available does not establish whether the actor intends to challenge the directive or seek legal relief.
The case highlights the potential immigration consequences faced by OCI cardholders when authorities determine that their activities may conflict with applicable regulations.
Further developments will depend on any response from the actor and subsequent decisions by the relevant immigration authorities.
