Police in Mansehra arrested two suspects over the alleged honour killings of Gul Nawaz, 27, and Samira, 18, on October 6.
Police in Mansehra, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, have arrested two suspects in connection with the separate killings of 27-year-old Gul Nawaz and 18-year-old Samira on October 6, alleging that both victims were killed by their own brothers in the name of honour.
According to a statement issued by the office of Mansehra District Police Officer Muhammad Azhar Khan, the suspects have been arrested and weapons allegedly used in the crimes have been recovered.
The two incidents took place within the jurisdictions of City Police Station and Sadar Police Station on the same day. First information reports (FIRs) were registered on October 6, within hours of each other, following complaints filed by the victims’ relatives.
According to the FIR concerning Samira’s death, the 18-year-old had been missing for approximately one month before the incident. Her disappearance had already been reported to City Police Station.
The complainant, identified as Samira’s cousin, alleged that the family later learned she had a friendship with a man named Gul Nawaz. The FIR stated that a local jirga, or tribal council, was also held over the matter because the family suspected that Gul Nawaz had abducted Samira with the intention of marrying her.
However, the available information does not establish whether the alleged abduction occurred or provide details about the outcome of the jirga.
Police have described the two killings as alleged honour crimes. According to the police statement, Gul Nawaz was allegedly killed by his brother, while Samira was allegedly killed by her own brother.
The fact that both deaths occurred on the same day has raised questions about whether the incidents were connected. However, the available details do not establish a direct link between the two killings or confirm whether the alleged relationship between the victims was the motive behind both crimes.
Reports have also referred to concerns about preventing generations of family enmity. Nevertheless, further details about the families’ positions, the nature of any longstanding dispute and the precise motives behind the killings remain unclear.
The arrests and reported recovery of weapons mark a development in the investigation. Further inquiries are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and clarify the allegations against the suspects.
The suspects’ guilt has yet to be established through judicial proceedings.
