British comedian and actor Russell Brand appeared at Southwark Crown Court in London on Monday as his trial began on 7 sexual offence charges involving 6 women, with jury selection due to start.
Brand, 51, has pleaded not guilty to all charges, which include 3 counts of rape, 3 counts of sexual assault and 1 count of indecent assault. The alleged incidents date from 1999 to 2009.
According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Brand arrived at the central London court in a grey suit and sunglasses, accompanied by his wife, Laura, before taking his seat in the dock.
10-week trial ahead
The trial is expected to last about 10 weeks. Prosecutors will present their case and the defence will challenge the allegations before a jury reaches its verdict.
From stand-up to screen
Born in Essex, Brand began performing stand-up comedy as a teenager and later worked as an MTV presenter and BBC Radio 2 host before moving into Hollywood films. He was previously married to American singer Katy Perry.
In recent years, he has built a large social media following, focusing on commentary on politics and public affairs.
Brand denies all the allegations and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
