Saudi Arabia has warned of a serious response following a series of deadly missile and drone attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on airports and critical infrastructure, raising fears of further military escalation in the Middle East.
Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman issued the warning on Monday during a conference in Riyadh, emphasizing the importance of national resilience and energy security. He said recent developments had tested Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure, institutions, and ability to withstand security threats.
The minister stressed that the situation required an equally serious response, although he did not announce specific military measures.
The warning followed repeated attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. A major strike on Saturday, October 10, reportedly killed 13 people and injured more than 300 others. Another attack on Sunday claimed one additional life and left several people wounded.
The attacks caused significant disruption to airport operations, forcing authorities to suspend flights and raising concerns about the safety of passengers and civilian infrastructure.
Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement claimed responsibility for attacks on Saudi facilities and warned airlines against using Saudi airports. The group said its military operations were connected to the ongoing conflict in Yemen and Saudi support for forces opposing the Houthis.
The latest escalation comes amid renewed fighting in Yemen, where the Houthis have been battling the internationally recognized government for more than a decade.
Saudi Arabia has supported the Yemeni government since 2015, while the Houthis maintain control over significant areas, including the capital, Sanaa.
Regional powers have strongly condemned the attacks. Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia issued a joint statement describing the strikes as a dangerous escalation and expressing support for Saudi Arabia’s right to protect its territory.
The developments have also raised concerns about international energy markets and maritime security. Continued instability around the Red Sea and the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait could threaten shipping routes and increase pressure on global oil supplies.
Security concerns remain high as Saudi authorities assess the damage and consider further measures to prevent additional attacks.
The situation highlights the growing risks of renewed regional confrontation and the urgent need to protect civilian infrastructure while pursuing diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.
