A 20- to 22-year-old student of the International Islamic University Islamabad was found dead near a former traffic police post close to Itwar Bazaar, prompting an investigation by local police and the homicide unit.
The deceased, identified as Laiba Ejaz, daughter of Muhammad Ejaz, lived in Flat No. 8 at Gulistan Plaza in G-10 Markaz, within the jurisdiction of Ramna Police Station in Islamabad’s Saddar Zone.
According to preliminary information, the student had allegedly paid Rs5 million to a travel agent identified as Nauman to facilitate her travel to the United States. The documents provided by the agent were reportedly found to be fake, leaving her under severe mental stress, according to the initial account.
However, police have yet to establish whether the alleged visa fraud was connected to her death. The circumstances and possible motives remain subject to investigation.
Police investigate circumstances surrounding death
According to the preliminary account, Laiba left her home at around 2pm on Friday. During efforts to locate her, her reported location was traced to a green belt near the former traffic police post close to Itwar Bazaar, where her body was subsequently reported to have been found.
The station house officer of Ramna Police Station, the homicide unit, and other senior police officials reached the scene. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the death and gathering information to establish what happened.
The case has also raised concerns about allegations of immigration fraud and the financial risks people face when seeking opportunities to travel abroad through private agents.
The reported payment of Rs5 million and allegations involving potentially fraudulent documents are significant aspects of the case that investigators may examine as they establish the sequence of events.
Questions over alleged immigration fraud
The allegations have prompted calls for accountability if the claims against the agent are substantiated. The family’s concerns and the circumstances surrounding the reported transaction may become relevant to the investigation.
At this stage, the allegations against the agent have not been independently verified, and no conclusion has been established regarding the cause of death or the role, if any, of another person.
Police investigations are continuing to determine the facts of the case.
