A 20-year-old woman was shot dead in Dina, Jhelum, while a video attributed to the suspected killer surfaced online, claiming responsibility and revealing an alleged engagement dispute.
WEBDESK – MEDIABITES
A 20-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead in broad daylight in Dina, Jhelum, with a social media video attributed to the suspected accused later circulating widely and purportedly claiming responsibility for the killing.
The victim was identified as Kiran, also known as Pathani. According to preliminary reports, she was targeted near City Police Post Dina before the alleged attacker fled the scene.
Police took the victim’s body into custody and initiated an investigation. Efforts are also underway to locate and arrest the suspected accused, identified in reports as Malik Khurram.
Engagement reportedly became source of dispute
Initial information about the case suggests that Kiran had been engaged to Khurram some time ago. However, reports circulating after the incident claim that Kiran and her mother later refused to proceed with the marriage.
According to the preliminary account, Khurram allegedly tried to persuade them to reconsider. The situation reportedly escalated, culminating in the shooting.
The exact circumstances behind the dispute remain under investigation, and the suspect’s claims about the engagement and his financial dealings with the family have not been independently verified.
Alleged confession circulates on social media
Several hours after the shooting, a video statement attributed to Khurram began circulating on social media.
In the video, the man allegedly identifies himself and claims responsibility for Kiran’s killing. He also makes a series of allegations concerning his relationship with the victim and her mother, including claims that he had financially supported them and spent money on their household needs.
The alleged statement further claims that the suspect had sold property to meet expenses and believed that Kiran would eventually marry him.
He also makes allegations about Kiran’s interactions with other people, which have not been independently verified.
The video contains an apparent admission of responsibility, but the authenticity of the recording, the identity of the person appearing in it and the circumstances in which it was recorded must be established by investigators.
Police examining evidence
Police are expected to examine the alleged video alongside other evidence collected from the crime scene.
Investigators may also examine CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts, forensic evidence, phone records and other digital material to establish what happened before, during and after the shooting.
The alleged confession could form part of the investigation, but a social media statement by itself does not establish guilt in a criminal case. Its evidentiary value will depend on verification and corroboration through the formal investigation.
The suspect’s alleged statement also includes a threat of self-harm. Authorities are therefore facing the additional task of locating him promptly while ensuring that no further loss of life occurs.
Case draws attention online
The alleged confession has generated significant discussion on social media, with users sharing portions of the statement and debating the circumstances surrounding the killing.
However, several claims contained in the circulating video remain allegations and have not been independently established.
Police have yet to publicly establish the complete motive for the killing or provide a detailed account of the evidence collected so far.
The investigation will determine the circumstances of Kiran’s death, the role of the suspected accused and whether any other individuals were involved.
Authorities are also expected to proceed according to law and ensure that individuals are not implicated merely because their names or allegations appear in a social media statement.
The case highlights once again the dangers of escalating disputes around relationships and engagements, while also raising concerns about the rapid circulation of unverified allegations through social media during an ongoing criminal investigation.
