Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s youngest daughter, Mahnoor Safdar, 24, will marry on September 12 in a private nikah ceremony at the family residence in Jati Umra, Raiwind. Only family members have been invited to the ceremony.
The wedding follows a London trip that has sparked controversy — one that raises uncomfortable questions about the cost of governing Pakistan’s largest province.
Mahnoor — The Youngest Sharif Graduate
Mahnoor Safdar, the youngest of Maryam and Muhammad Safdar’s three children, studied at SOAS University of London between 2023 and 2026.
Her father is Captain Retired Muhammad Safdar, Maryam Nawaz’s husband and a PML-N politician. Her grandfather is former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Mahnoor’s fiancé belongs to a prominent business family. However, further details have been kept private to respect the family’s confidentiality.
The engagement was held earlier this year in a low-key ceremony attended by PML-N Chief Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s family, Mahnoor’s father, Captain Retired Muhammad Safdar, and other close relatives.
Why Maryam Was in London
Maryam traveled to London specifically to attend Mahnoor’s graduation ceremony at SOAS University of London as part of its September 2026 graduation ceremonies held in central London.
Maryam traveled to London specifically to attend her daughter’s graduation and kept the visit private, announcing no formal political engagements during her short stay. Earlier, she met PML-N UK leaders Ahsan Dar and Khurram Butt for a luncheon meeting.
Speaking at the graduation, Maryam said she was extremely proud of her daughter and that there can be no prouder moment for parents than seeing their children graduate.
She also confirmed that all three of her children had completed their higher education.
The Gulfstream Controversy — Rs 10 Million Bill
The London trip has generated sharp public criticism over its cost to Pakistani taxpayers.
According to claims shared by anchor Mohammad Maalick, the Gulfstream jet reportedly used by Maryam Nawaz for her personal trip to London incurred around Rs 3.5 million in parking fees for just three days, while fuel reportedly cost Rs 7.8 million. If accurate, that puts the reported cost of the trip at more than Rs 10 million.
Maalick has also claimed that President Asif Ali Zardari traveled on a private trip using a government aircraft, with its parking bill allegedly reaching Rs 5.4 million.
These figures require independent verification. But the timing is politically difficult for Maryam Nawaz, who leads a provincial government that has publicly championed austerity and reduced expenditure as core governance principles.
A chief minister who asks citizens to tighten their belts while flying a Gulfstream to London for a personal family trip, reportedly costing Rs 10 million, is making a statement about priorities — whether she intends to or not.
The Punjab government has not officially responded to Mohammad Maalick’s specific figures.
The Wedding — Simple by Sharif Standards
The September 12 nikah will be a private family affair, in contrast to the high-profile wedding celebrations that marked the marriage of Maryam’s son Junaid Safdar in 2021, which attracted over a thousand guests and significant national media attention.
While Junaid Safdar’s wedding festivities gained widespread fame for their grandeur, the Chief Minister opted for simplicity at her younger daughter’s engagement, setting a different precedent.
