A devastating fire broke out in the nursery of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad, killing 15 newborn babies, according to hospital authorities.
Rescue officials said the fire has been brought under control and cooling operations are underway. Rescue sources said the fire reportedly started after an air-conditioner compressor exploded.
Hospital authorities said 16 babies were present in the nursery when the fire broke out. A female doctor managed to rescue one baby, while 15 newborns reportedly died.
The fire broke out on the third floor of the MCH Ward. Six fire brigade vehicles and four ambulances took part in the rescue operation.
The district administration has formed an inquiry committee headed by an Additional Deputy Commissioner to determine the cause of the fire and fix responsibility.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the incident and ordered an immediate investigation, directing authorities to identify those responsible and take strict action.
