WAN-IFRA CEO Stig Kirk Ørskov shares five candid lessons from his first summer leading the world’s most important journalism organisation, from AI’s threat to referral traffic to the extraordinary resilience of global news media.

When the CEO of the World Association of News Publishers reflects publicly on his first summer in the role, the global journalism community pays attention. Stig Kirk Ørskov has done exactly that, and his five lessons are as candid, urgent, and thought-provoking as anyone familiar with his leadership style would expect.
Lesson 1, The world needs fact-based journalism more than ever
Ørskov opened with the observation that frames everything else. The world is living through overlapping crises, geopolitical conflict, climate change, migration, and rapid technological disruption, each amplifying the others.
“Fact-based journalism is essential for having a shared understanding of these challenges and having a meaningful conversation about how to address them,” he said.
It is a simple point. But in 2026, simple points sometimes need restating with conviction.
Lesson 2, AI is fundamentally reshaping digital media
Search engines once sent people to news publishers. That relationship is breaking down. AI-powered search and chatbots increasingly provide answers themselves, cutting publishers out of the referral chain entirely.
The result: referral traffic to news websites has fallen dramatically across the industry.
And there is a second, less discussed problem. Bots now account for more than half the traffic reaching many publishers, leaving media companies paying to manage traffic that creates no meaningful value while those same bots extract value from the journalism they are consuming.
Lesson 3, The platforms have chosen not to pay for journalism
Ørskov named the structural tension at the heart of the current media ecosystem directly. Social media and AI platforms want to control distribution, own the direct relationship with users, and monetise their attention.
The expensive work of reporting, verifying, editing and publishing is left to others, particularly news media. And too often the platforms prefer not to pay for it.
“That is not a sustainable foundation for a healthy information ecosystem,” he said.

Lesson 4, News media’s capacity to innovate is extraordinary
After the hard lessons, a genuinely encouraging one. Whether at the World News Media Congress in Marseille or Digital Media India in Delhi, Ørskov said he was consistently struck by the creativity and agility across the global publishing industry.
New digital subscription models. Inventive advertising products. AI-supported investigative journalism. More personalised audience journeys.
“The pressures are real. So is the ingenuity,” he said, capturing in six words what entire industry reports struggle to communicate.
Lesson 5, WAN-IFRA exceeded his own expectations
Ørskov’s fifth lesson was personal and warm. He said he already knew WAN-IFRA had exceptionally skilled and committed colleagues and strong stakeholder support. What he did not fully anticipate was how much the reality would exceed even those expectations.
“I can’t imagine a more meaningful purpose than ours, to unite media globally to strengthen the business of trusted journalism and defend press freedom,” he said.
He closed with a reflection that connected the professional to the deeply human. The best holidays, he observed, are those spent close to the people we love, in safe and peaceful surroundings. That freedom, he noted, is one that far too many people in the world do not have.
“Ensuring that the rest of us understand their circumstances and the challenges they face remains one of journalism’s most important responsibilities.”
It is a reminder that behind every media industry metric, every referral traffic figure, and every AI disruption discussion is the original purpose of journalism, to tell the stories of people whose stories would otherwise go untold.
