A South Korean court has ordered SK Hynix Chairman Chey Tae-won to pay $644 million to his former wife, Roh Soh-yeong, in one of the most expensive divorce settlements in modern history.
According to international media reports, the ruling is being described as South Korea’s largest-ever divorce settlement and among the costliest globally over the past century.
The legal battle between the 65-year-old business tycoon and Roh Soh-yeong has lasted for several years. In 2024, the Seoul High Court had ordered Chey to pay $940 million, but he appealed the decision to the Supreme Court.
After reviewing the case, the Supreme Court reduced the settlement to $644 million, stating that Roh should receive approximately one-third of the couple’s shared marital assets in cash.
Despite the landmark ruling, legal experts note that the case is not yet final, as both parties still have the right to file further appeals.
Chey Tae-won and Roh Soh-yeong married in 1988, when Roh’s father, Roh Tae-woo, was serving as South Korea’s president. Following years of marital disputes, Chey filed for divorce in 2017 after mediation efforts failed, and the case has been moving through the courts since 2022.
