The teacher who survived the tragic roof collapse at a tuition centre in Lahore’s Kahna area has spoken publicly for the first time, saying she never imagined the building’s roof would give way during repair work.
Speaking from Lahore General Hospital, Anila said she had been running tuition classes for young children for the past two years to support her family due to financial hardship. Her husband earns a living by operating a roadside cart near the local market.
She said around 30 to 35 children were enrolled at the tuition centre, while 20 to 22 students had attended classes on the day of the tragedy.
“The roof used to leak during rainfall, so repair work had been started. I never thought the roof would collapse,” Anila said. “Whatever happened was by the will of Allah.”
She also shared that her daughter, who was injured in the incident, has recovered and has been discharged from the hospital, although Anila has not yet been able to meet her.
Hospital officials confirmed that Anila is out of danger and is expected to be discharged within the next couple of days.
Meanwhile, police have registered a case over the deadly incident. According to the FIR, the roof collapsed due to ongoing repair work, negligence, and excessive load on the structure, resulting in the deaths of 14 children and injuries to eight others.
Authorities said the property’s owner and four other individuals have been taken into custody. DIG Operations Faisal Kamran stated that further legal action will be taken after the investigation is completed.
The tragic incident occurred in Basti Eidgah, Kahna, where the roof of a tuition centre collapsed during class, leaving families across Lahore in mourning.
