The government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir has suspended mobile phone and internet services across the region ahead of a protest call announced for 9 June by the Joint Public Action Committee. The shutdown, which began today, is expected to remain in place until 12 June, according to official orders.
Authorities have also issued an advisory urging tourists and other travelers to avoid visiting Azad Kashmir until 20 June due to the prevailing situation. In addition, more than 1,500 personnel from Islamabad Police have been deployed to reinforce security in the region.
The Joint Public Action Committee has announced a strike and long march despite ongoing dialogue with the government. Officials have defended the measures, stating that 35 out of 38 demands had already been accepted and describing the continued protest call as politically motivated.
Separately, the AJK government has officially declared the Joint Public Action Committee a proscribed organization under the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Terrorism Act 2014. The notification, issued by the Interior Department and approved by the AJK President, alleges that the group has been involved in activities aimed at disturbing public order, spreading fear, and inciting unrest. Legal action will be taken in accordance with the law.
