The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a warning regarding potential floods in the region due to India’s release of over 70,000 cusecs of water into Pakistan’s River Sutlej. Local authorities have confirmed that a substantial amount of water has been discharged from Harike headworks into the Sutlej River, which will result in the flooding of adjacent areas.
To prepare for the impending floods, the Deputy Commissioners of Kasur, Okara, Wahari, Pakpattan, and Vehari have been advised to make necessary arrangements ahead of time. The Director General of PDMA has ordered the establishment of relief camps in all districts.
Officials have been instructed to prioritize the safety of people’s lives and properties. Additionally, authorities have urged the public to refrain from approaching urban rivers and canals.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also directed provincial authorities to ensure early warning systems, prompt responses, and evacuations in areas along the banks of the Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej rivers, and their tributaries that are at risk of flooding.
Furthermore, the NDMA has instructed district administrations to develop contingency traffic plans for urban areas susceptible to flooding, along with swift de-watering operations.
Officials will continue to monitor the situation until July 20, and residents in high-risk areas are advised to stay informed and adhere to guidelines provided by the relevant administration.
