U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly rejected a proposal from Vladimir Putin to transfer Iran’s highly enriched uranium to Russia as part of a potential plan to ease the escalating Middle East conflict.
According to a report by Axios, the idea was raised during a recent phone call between Trump and Putin earlier this week.
Putin reportedly suggested that Russia could remove Iran’s 60% enriched uranium and store it on Russian soil as part of a broader diplomatic effort to end the war in the region.
However, Trump declined the proposal.
U.S. wants uranium secured
A U.S. official told Axios that the idea of transferring Iran’s enriched uranium has been proposed before but has never gained Washington’s approval.
“This is not the first time it was offered. It hasn’t been accepted. The U.S. position is we need to see the uranium secured,” the official said.
It remains unclear whether Tehran would agree to such a proposal if it were revived.
Iran previously rejected transfer idea
In earlier negotiations before the conflict escalated, Iran reportedly rejected the idea of shipping its uranium abroad.
Instead, Iranian officials proposed diluting the uranium inside Iran under international supervision by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Military option still on the table
Reports earlier this week also suggested that the Trump administration is considering more aggressive options.
Several media outlets said Washington is evaluating whether U.S. special operations forces could be deployed inside Iran to secure or seize the country’s enriched uranium stockpile.
When asked about such plans in an interview with Fox News, Trump downplayed the possibility but did not rule it out.
“We’re not focused on that. But at some point, we might be,” Trump said.
War diplomacy intensifies
The exchange between Trump and Putin highlights growing international efforts to prevent the Iran conflict from escalating further.
With tensions rising across the Middle East, world powers are increasingly exploring diplomatic and military options to control Iran’s nuclear material and prevent wider instability in the region.
